One of my favorite books, and I have about 100 of them, is Raising a Modern-Day Knight by Robert Lewis. When summarizing the principles of this book to a group of men in prison, I saw tears flowing from men who had once been hardened. Why the tears? Because these men knew that they were hearing truths that they so desperately needed truths that could set them free and give them a new start in life. Here are the first three principles: A real man has a will to obey, a work to do, and a woman to love. You see, Jesus, the perfect man, came to obey the will of His father, do the work on the cross, and the woman to love, the church. I see so many men today struggling with what they are supposed to do with their lives. They don’t enjoy their work, and their family life is in shambles. Often the reason is because they do not possess a will to obey. It is not until we learn to submit to the authorities in our own lives, that God begins to open the doors for us to lead in other areas, particularly in our work, and with the woman we love. Sarah Edwards once said that a child who has not learned to obey his parents will not learn to obey his God. Submission to authority requires humility, and humility is the foundation for everything else in life. In Proverbs 15, Solomon teaches us that before honor comes humility. A will to obey opens the door for a work to do, which releases the tensions of life so that we can enjoy a woman to love.
