We who preach and write, do so in a manner different from which the Scriptures have been written. We write while we make progress. We learn something new every day. We speak as we still knock for understanding...If anyone criticizes me when I have said what is right, he does me an injustice. But I would be more angry with the one who praises me and takes what I have written for Gospel truth than I would be with the one who criticizes me unfairly. -Augustine

Books take us out of our natural spheres, and enlarge us by taking us to people, places and situations that we couldn’t otherwise go to. They also have the ability to take us to a very scary place deep within the depths of our complex hearts and emotions. When we relate to the characters, something very personal and powerful is dealt with inside of us. It shakes us, it shatters our false exteriors, it unshackles us, it ships us out to go and do the same for another (in God’s name, in His wisdom, and in His love, and not in the way of Eldredge. They remind us of the bigger picture that Eldredge refers to the great epic adventure that we are all a part of. I believe there is a hero in the heart of every man just waiting to be released, albeit incrementally, and that his courage is kindled by both the Cause and by his Comrades. Now his fellow warriors, teachers and statesmen might be of another time, another race, another continent, but the heart that beats within is the same.

Left Brain Right Brain

When I think of the modern phenomenon of ADD and ADHD, I picture in my mind a pile of hay. If you think of each strand as an electrical circuit in the brain, you can get a good picture of what is happening to our children. As I have stated before there are trillions of electrical circuits firing in a child’s brain, which are then hard wired as they develop into adulthood. Depending upon what a child hears and sees repetitiously, will determine what he retains, gains, or loses. It is no wonder that one of the dominant career choices for junior high and high school students is to work in connection with some form of video game development. What children see and hear daily is influencing their motivations and their futures. Furthermore, a child who is sedated with the media will have a greater propensity to think in illogical disconnected thought patterns. Whereas children who read develop the ability to think in logically connected thought patterns. Moreover, watching TV generally shifts brain activity from the left side to the right side. The right side does not critically analyze incoming messages, but instead triggers a release of feel good addictive endorphins, influencing a purely. If we are going to cultivate in our children and ourselves, the skill of discernment, then we must put away childish things and be transformed through the renewing of our minds. It has now been thirty years since I first met Charlie T. and I will never forget what he said to me on that day: “You will be the same today as you will be five years from now, except for the people you meet, and the books you read!”
