We who preach and write, do so in a manner different from which the Scriptures have been written. We write while we make progress. We learn something new every day. We speak as we still knock for understanding...If anyone criticizes me when I have said what is right, he does me an injustice. But I would be more angry with the one who praises me and takes what I have written for Gospel truth than I would be with the one who criticizes me unfairly. -Augustine

Raising a Modern Day Knight

One of my favorite books is Raising a Modern Day Knight by Robert Lewis. One of my favorite experiences with this book involved a group of prisoners. As I summarized the principles of this book to a group of hardened individuals, I saw tears start to flow. Why? These men knew that they were hearing truths that that they so desperately needed–truths that could set them free and give them a new start in life. Here are the first three.

A real man has a will to obey, a work to do, and a woman to love. You see, Jesus, the perfect man, came to obey the will of his father, do the work on the cross, and to love his bride, the church. I see so many men today struggling with what they are supposed to do with their lives. They don’t enjoy their work, and their family often suffers because of it. One reason that men don’t enjoy their work is that they have not learned submission to authority–a will to obey. It is not until we learn to submit to the authorities in our lives that God begins to open the doors for us to lead in other areas, particularly our work.

Our work often then provides the stability which enables our enjoyment of a woman to love. Sarah Edwards once said that a child who has not learned to obey his parents will in the end not learn to obey his God. Submission to authority requires humility, and humility is the foundation for everything else in life. Solomon echoes this sentiment in Proverbs 15, teaching that before honor comes humility.

A will to obey opens the door for a work to do, which releases the tensions of life so that we can enjoy a woman to love. Think about it.
